Happy as a Pig in ...

The page dedicated to rare pigs in Northern Ireland.

Whilst it is true that most keepers of rare breeds in Northern Ireland keep either cattle and sheep (or both) there is a band of enthusiasts ensuring that rare breed pigs are catered for (in more ways than one !).

Presently there are registered keepers of Saddleback, Middle White, Berkshire, Large Black, Gloucester Old Spots and Tamworths. A lot of these animals would be present at the many shows and exhibitions in the Province. To offset the cost of keeping these pigs many keepers supply meat to local butchers and shoppers tired of the blandness of commercial pork.

The highlight of the 2005 Show season. The first time in living memory that a non-commercial breed won the Interbreed Championship at Northern Ireland's premier agricultural show at Balmoral. Pictured here is Mrs Fairley from Co. Down receiving her prize from the sponsor.
